NEW DELHI: There is no stopping Abhishek Sharma, as the top-ranked T20I batter stamped his authority once again in the shortest format by adding another milestone to his nascent career. The left-handed batter achieved what no Indian has ever done, becoming the first Indian to hit 100 sixes in a calendar year in T20 cricket. He reached the landmark during Punjab's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Elite Group C clash against Services in Hyderabad on Saturday. Abhishek brought up the milestone with his second six of the innings, etching his name into the record books in style. He then carried on with a fluent 62 off 34 balls, lacing his knock with eight fours and three sixes, further underscoring his incredible consistency across formats and tournaments. For India, he has smashed 47 sixes in 17 T20I matches. In IPL 2025, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he hit 28 more sixes in 14 games. In the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he has already hammered 26 sixes in just six matches. Altogether, Abhishek has now hit 101 sixes in 37 T20 games in 2025. Before this, the Indian record for most T20 sixes in a single year also belonged to Abhishek - he hit 87 sixes in 2024. Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav held the record with 85 sixes in 2022. On the global stage, Nicholas Pooran still holds the all-time record. He smashed 170 sixes in 2024 across 76 matches for various leagues and for the West Indies. T20 legend Chris Gayle was the first player to cross 100 sixes in a calendar year, achieving it in 2011. He repeated the feat in five more years during his long T20 career - a record that stood untouched until the new generation began catching up.
