Chennai Super Kings have suffered a significant blow ahead of IPL 2026. Nathan Ellis the Australian fast bowler has been ruled out of the entire tournament with a hamstring injury and will not recover in time for the season which starts on March 28.
Ellis had featured in the recent T20 World Cup 2026 before the injury ended his IPL plans and CSK are now actively searching for a replacement with nine days to go before their opening game against Rajasthan Royals on March 30.
CSK CEO K S Viswanathan confirmed the news on Thursday during an event to announce Kauvery Hospitals as an official partner of the franchise.
Why Nathan Ellis mattered and what CSK lose without him in IPL 2026
Ellis was set to be CSK's primary death over specialist in IPL 2026 and his absence creates a problem the franchise needs to solve quickly.
Since 2022 CSK had relied on Matheesha Pathirana as their death over weapon but the Sri Lankan pacer was released after a disappointing 2025 campaign and has since joined KKR.
Ellis was brought in specifically to fill that role. Ellis is 31 years old and has built a reputation for back of the hand variations and accurate yorkers that make him particularly difficult to score off in the final five overs of an innings.
Viswanathan was direct about what the loss means. "It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements."
Without Ellis CSK's death bowling will fall largely on Khaleel Ahmed and Matt Henry. Both are quality bowlers but neither is a specialist death over operator in the way Ellis and Pathirana were. Ruturaj Gaikwad and the CSK management will need to rethink how they construct their bowling attack and the replacement they bring in will need to be ready to contribute from game one.

The travel situation and when overseas players arrive
Viswanathan also addressed the overseas player arrival situation at the CSK camp. He confirmed that foreign recruits will join in the next few days and said the ongoing West Asia crisis which has disrupted major airline hubs in the UAE and Qatar has not significantly affected CSK's travel plans.
The crisis that grounded flights from the region and created logistical problems for players across the world has not caused major issues for the CSK overseas contingent according to the CEO.
With Sanju Samson already in camp and the Indian core settled CSK will be hoping the overseas arrivals go smoothly and that a suitable replacement for Ellis can be confirmed before the tournament begins on March 28.
