In this ever-evolving T20 format, few teams, such as the Mumbai Indians, have an everlasting dominance throughout the IPL seasons. As the five-time IPL champions head into 2026, it seems that they have assembled the kind of squad that is a combination of experience, firepower, and versatility. They are one of the favourites to win the trophy in the 2026 season, with a number of their players having delivered brilliant performances at the T20 World Cup 2026. In the last version, MI went all the way to Qualifier 2, and their campaign came to an end by a five-wicket defeat by the Punjab Kings.

By the time of the IPL 2026 auction, the Mumbai Indians would have the smallest purse of all ten teams, 2.75 crore and an already solid core of 20 players. They had five vacancies to fill, one abroad, and their most successful purchase was that of wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock at 1 crore. In the meantime, Arjun Tendulkar was sold, Reece Topley and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were set free.

Having top-finished proven match-winners, and explosive finishers in the middle, MI should have everything to support it with a lethal bowling attack to support it is ready to get back to the top of the mountain. It is not about talent; however, the big question is about the combination. Trying to achieve the right balance in a format characterised by slender margins, here is a preview of the Mumbai Indians’ projected playing XI in the year 2026 in the IPL.

Here is a breakdown of the Mumbai Indians’ predicted Playing XI IPL 2026:

1. Rohit Sharma, an experienced opener, provides stability at the top. His ability to stitch an innings while accelerating makes him crucial for the powerplay.

2. Quinton De Kock, a left-hander who is aggressive and a perfect partner to Rohit. De Kock guarantees fast starts and maintains the scoreboard running with the attacking stroke play.

3. Tilak Varma, with his recent performances in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, is a young talent who can link up the top and middle order.

4. Suryakumar Yadav at No.4, despite a shaky T20 World Cup campaign. He displayed phenomenal performances in IPL 2025, with 717 runs, winning the MVP of the IPL 2025. He would be the anchor of the Mumbai Indians' middle order.

5. Hardik Pandya (captain) will look to continue to extend his form in IPL 2026, after a strong campaign at the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya displayed elite all-round form. He became the first captain to take a 5-wicket haul in IPL (5/36), and with the bat, he maintained a strike rate of 160+.

6. Will Jacks has also been on red-hot form in the T20 cricket with both his bat and ball. He had a brilliant T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with four awards as Player of the Match. Nevertheless, Sherfane Rutherford can be a possible replacement in case of circumstances and game combinations, particularly, after being sold in by the Gujarat Titans before the mini-auction.

7. Naman Dhir was one of the breakout stars in the Mumbai Indians' last season. Retained through RTM at 5.25 crore, he had registered 252 runs in 12 innings with an 182.60 strike rate, making him a dependable middle-order player.

8. Mitchell Santner brings in the much-needed balance through his left-arm rotation and lower-order batting. After carrying his team to the T20 World Cup final recently, he will have the experience and command, especially in the middle overs.

9. Deepak Chahar should be instrumental with the new ball. His strongest skill is swing bowling, where he is particularly effective in the powerplay, where he has garnered 11 wickets in 14 matches last season. Although he has not played as much since IPL 2025, his possession of the ability to move the ball early is crucial.

10. Jasprit Bumrah remains a bowling spearhead that MI is unable to replace. His consistency is whether he is playing powerplay, middle overs or at the death. He took 18 wickets in 12 games last year and comes back following a successful campaign of the T20 World Cup 2026 in fine form.

11. Trent Boult was exceptional in IPL 2025, appearing as the top wicket-taker of MI, with 22 wickets in 16 matches. He is a key asset again because of his capability to hit first with the new ball.

In the case of the Impact Player position, Shardul Thakur is a good candidate. He joined the Mumbai Indians after being traded by the Lucknow Super Giants for 2 crore rupees. The all-rounder in Mumbai also contributes to the pace attack as he has already claimed 13 wickets in 10 games last year, and he will probably be the impact replacement of MI as he is capable of playing in any position.
