NEW DELHI: Sanjay Manjrekar once again found himself at the centre of a controversy after making a sharp remark about Indian legend Virat Kohli.

His comments, this time comparing Kohli with England great Joe Root in the Test format, did not go down well and triggered a strong reaction from Kohli’s brother, Vikas Kohli.

Manjrekar’s remarks came in a video shared on Instagram, where he spoke about Kohli’s Test career while praising Root’s recent achievements in the longest format.

“Well, as Joe Root attains new heights in Test cricket, my mind goes to Virat Kohli. He’s walked away from Tests, and it’s unfortunate that in the five years that he struggled before retiring, he didn’t quite put his heart and soul into finding out the problems as to why he was averaging 31 for five years in Tests,” Manjrekar said on a video posted on Instagram.

Vikas Kohli hits back on social media

The comments did not sit well with Vikas Kohli, who has often been vocal on social media when it comes to defending his brother. Vikas fired back with a sharp post.

SEEMS LIKE LOGON KI DAAL ROTI NAHI CHALTI…. BINA VIRAT KOHLI KA NAAM LIYE HUE (some people struggle to stay relevant or earn attention unless they bring Virat Kohli’s name into the conversation),” wrote Vikas.

Kohli’s retirement and current focus

Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket last year after a relatively quiet phase in the format, with modest returns over his final couple of years. The decision sent shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity, as many expected him to continue longer in whites.

Kohli had already stepped away from T20Is in 2024 and has since focused entirely on the ODI format.
