India skipper KL Rahul acknowledged that his side needed to capitalise better in crucial phases but felt the toss had a major say in their four-wicket defeat against South Africa in the second ODI on Tuesday.

Batting first after losing the toss yet again, India posted a strong 358/5, powered by centuries from Virat Kohli (102 off 93), his 53rd ODI hundred, and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105 off 83), who brought up his maiden century in the format. However, South Africa chased down the target with authority, finishing at 362/6 in 49.2 overs. Aiden Markram led the charge with a brilliant 110, well supported by Matthew Breetzke (68) and Dewald Brevis (54).

“Not really a tough one to take, considering how much dew there was,” Rahul said during the post-match presentation. “Bowling in the second innings becomes extremely difficult. Toss plays a huge role, I’m kicking myself for losing it again,” he added with a smile.

Rahul admitted India could still have improved with the bat despite a strong total.

“Even though 350 looks great, the discussion in the dressing room has been about how we can push for 20-25 more to help our bowlers when the ball gets wet,” he explained.

The skipper also lauded Gaikwad and Kohli for their class at the top.

“It was beautiful to watch Rutu bat. Virat, we’ve seen do it so many times. Rutu shifting gears after fifty was special.”

For South Africa, it was a memorable night — the run chase was their highest successful ODI chase on Indian soil. Captain Temba Bavuma was delighted with the statement victory.

“Very happy to cross the line,” Bavuma said. “We wanted to improve with the ball, and our batting was excellent. Record chase, partnerships throughout, it shows how strong we need to be against this Indian side.”

He also highlighted the hunger within the squad.

“There’s strong competition for places, and performances like these give us massive confidence,” he added.
