India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul has hinted that fans in Ranchi may get a special surprise during the opening ODI against South Africa on Sunday, as former India captain MS Dhoni could be in attendance at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

The first ODI marks the beginning of a three-match series scheduled in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. With the opener being played in Dhoni’s hometown, his presence in the stands could significantly elevate the atmosphere and energise the crowd.

After a disappointing 0–2 defeat in the Test series, the ODIs offer India an early opportunity to reset and build momentum ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, KL Rahul expressed his excitement at the possibility of Dhoni watching the team play.

“Obviously, we have all played under him. We have all been his fans, and we have also played alongside him. So he is a friend. And to know someone like MS… what can I say? It’s a really happy feeling,” Rahul said. “Getting an opportunity like this, to know someone as big and as successful as him, as Indian cricketers, we have all respected him as a human being as well.”

Rahul added that Dhoni’s presence would boost both the crowd and the players.

“If he comes to watch the match, the excitement for the crowd and for us will increase even more. If the stadium fills up, we will enjoy playing here even more. Hopefully, we can win the game, put in a good performance, entertain the crowd, and make MS Dhoni happy as well,” he said.

Ranchi is already buzzing with cricket fever. Earlier this week, Dhoni hosted Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and several other teammates for dinner at his farmhouse. He even personally drove Kohli back to the team hotel — a gesture that quickly went viral on social media.
