NEW DELHI: The title-winning Indian stars expectedly dominated the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Team of the Tournament announced on Tuesday, with Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma earning well-deserved spots in the line-up.

The Indian trio played pivotal roles in guiding India to their maiden World Cup triumph after defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Runners-up South Africa also have three players in the side, with captain Laura Wolvaardt named skipper of the Team of the Tournament following her remarkable run with the bat. Wolvaardt amassed 571 runs at an average of 71.37, breaking the record for the most runs scored in a single edition of the Women’s World Cup.

Indian stars shine bright

Australia’s Annabel Sutherland, Ash Gardner and leg spinner Alana King also made the team after helping their side reach the semi-finals, while Pakistan’s Sidra Nawaz was chosen as wicketkeeper — the only player from a team that missed the final four.

England’s Sophie Ecclestone joined the XI following another strong tournament, while her teammate Nat Sciver Brunt was named as the 12th player.

Mandhana finished as the second-highest run scorer of the tournament with 434 runs at an average of 54.25, including a century and two fifties. Her 109 against New Zealand in Navi Mumbai stood out, while her scores of 80 and 88 against Australia and England underlined her consistency against top opposition.

Rodrigues made 292 runs at an average of 58.40, including a match-winning 127 not out against Australia in the semi-finals. She also chipped in with crucial knocks throughout the tournament, including an unbeaten 76 against New Zealand and a handy 24 in the final against South Africa.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma, named Player of the Tournament, was India’s most valuable player. She scored 215 runs at an average of 30.71 and took 22 wickets at 20.40. Deepti saved her best for the final, claiming 5 for 39 and scoring 58 to seal India’s historic win.
