All IPL Teams in History - Complete List

The first season of IPL was held in 2008 with 8 teams, among which only Deccan Chargers discontinued in 2012. Throughout IPL history Mumbai Indians, KKR and RCB remain constant teams with Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings who were modified from Delhi Daredevils & Kings XI Punjab. Many new teams were introduced in IPL history but later discontinued further. CSK and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two seasons of IPL in 2016 & 17, except they are one of the constant teams which appear in each season. Here in this post we will discuss all the IPL teams in history from 2008 to present. 

IPL teams from 2008 to 2025

There were 8 teams in the starting season of IPL 2008 which were Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers. In the IPL 2011, two new teams, Kochi Tuskers Kerala & Pune Warriors India were introduced in the list and teams expanded to 10 teams. 

While Kochi Tuskers Kerala stopped playing in their very first season, Deccan Chargers the other team who discontinued from 2012. Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared from IPL 2013 as a replacement of Deccan Chargers, and are still playing. Pune Warriors India, another team who discontinued to appear further from IPL 2013 season. 

In IPL 2016, another two new teams, Gujarat Lions & Rising Pune Supergiant were introduced in the competition as a replacement of CSK & RR who were banned for two seasons. But they stopped playing in the 2018 IPL season. 

The other major IPL team expansion was in IPL 2022 Gujarat Titans & Lucknow Super Giants took part in this mega event. They are still playing as an active team in IPL 2026. 

IPL teams in 2025

In the IPL 2025 season,10 teams participated which were Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants. Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Chennai have the most fan following among the active teams. 

MI owned by the legendary Nita Ambani had Hardik Pandya as the skipper in IPL 2025, qualified for the playoffs but lost to Punjab Kings at the second qualifier. Ajinkya Rahane was the skipper from KKR in the last IPL season and the team is owned by bollywood legend Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Venki Mysore.

Narayanswamy Srinivasan owned the Chennai Super Kings team who had Ruturaj Gaikwad as their skipper in IPL 2025. United Spirits Ltd is the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore who were the IPL 2025 champion and Rajat Patidar was the winning captain of the season. 

Veteran businessman Sanjiv Goena is the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants team, led by Rishabh Pant in the last season of IPL. Axar Patel led Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, which is owned by Parth Jindal, the legendary businessman of the JSW cements. 

Bollywood superstar Preeti Zinta and Wadia Group owned Punjab Kings and Shreyas Iyer was their skipper in the last IPL season. Kavya Maran, the CEO of the Sun TV network is the owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad team, led by Pat Cummins in IPL 2025. Shubman Gill led the Gujarat Titans team in the last IPL season, owned by the Torrent Group and CVC Capital Partners.
