NEW DELHI: India became the first team in cricket history to win both the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup on home soil after clinching their third T20 title with a commanding victory over New Zealand.
The triumph not only made India the most successful side in the tournament’s history but also marked the first time a team lifted the T20 crown in front of their own fans.
Coming into the tournament, India were widely seen as one of the strongest contenders, boasting an explosive batting lineup and a well-balanced bowling attack. Despite entering the competition with immense expectations, the journey was not entirely smooth.
Bouncing back after setbacks
India faced a major setback during the Super 8s stage when they suffered a heavy defeat against South Africa.
The loss briefly put their campaign under pressure, forcing them to rely on other results to secure qualification. However, the team responded with resilience and determination.
Echoes of the 2011 ODI World Cup
India’s triumph also brought back memories of the iconic ODI World Cup 2011 campaign under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Much like the recent T20 tournament, India had stumbled against South Africa in the group stage of that competition as well.
However, the team regrouped brilliantly and went on to produce a memorable run in the knockout rounds. The campaign ended with the unforgettable final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium.
Dhoni’s legendary six to seal the victory not only secured India’s second ODI World Cup after a 28-year wait but also made them the first team to lift the trophy in their own country
