New Zealand have been hit by an early setback ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, with key batters Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway struck down by illness just days before the tournament begins. The duo are expected to miss New Zealand’s warm-up match against the USA in Mumbai. Still, head coach Rob Walter remains confident they will be fit in time for the team’s opening fixture against Afghanistan on Sunday in Chennai.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Walter confirmed that both players are dealing with viral infections. “There’s a bit of illness in the camp at the moment, unfortunately. Devon and Rachin are struggling with a viral infection, which I suppose is part and parcel of touring,” he said. Walter also revealed that Ravindra’s condition appeared concerning overnight, suggesting the all-rounder may need extra recovery time.

In addition to Ravindra and Conway, New Zealand will also be without Finn Allen for the warm-up game, as the explosive opener continues his recovery from a shoulder injury. However, there was positive news on the fitness front, with Michael Bracewell expected to be available after recovering from a calf issue.

“Everyone is sort of on track at this stage to be fit and healthy for game one, which is good news,” Walter added.

One of the biggest boosts for New Zealand has been the return of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson. The express pacer, known for his raw pace, is set to play a key role in the Black Caps’ World Cup campaign. Walter praised Ferguson’s commitment during his comeback, revealing that the pacer was already touching 145 kmph in training.

“He’s worked incredibly hard to get himself ready for the World Cup. He said he was going to ease into it, but he was bowling 145. If that’s him easing in, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s to come,” Walter said.
