NEW DELHI: Former England captain Ian Botham expressed strong criticism of England’s performance following their eight-wicket loss to Australia in the second Ashes Test.
The visitors were completely outplayed at the Gabba, with poor fielding and a lack of tactical awareness contributing to their collapse under pressure.

Criticism of preparation and missed opportunities
Speaking during the afternoon session, Botham reserved his sharpest criticism for England’s overall readiness.
“Do you know what, if I was an England supporter and had paid the money to come here, I'd be asking the ECB... for a refund because this team... is not prepared. I don't think the bowlers are fit enough, strong enough.”
The comments came after a match where England dropped five crucial catches, allowing Australia to capitalise and dominate the proceedings. Botham highlighted that the visitors failed to exploit the weaknesses of the Australian side and showed little resilience under pressure.
Botham also pointed out England’s lack of preparation before the Test.
“Well, they missed the trick as well. They could have sent the team that was going to play in this Test. They could have gone to Canberra, or wherever it is they were playing. And they could have gone there, and at least they would have had some experience with the pink ball.”
The former England star noted that England’s inability to plan ahead left them exposed in crucial moments, particularly in fielding and bowling, where they could have taken advantage of Australian weaknesses.
While critical of England, Botham acknowledged Australia’s fighting spirit.
“Every single player in that Australian side fought to actually be out there and bowl.”
