Arshdeep Singh's infamous throw towards Daryl Mitchell in the T20 World Cup 2026 final led to a fine from the ICC on Tuesday, March 11. The Indian fast bowler was fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his antics at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8.
The incident occurred during the 11th over when Arshdeep Singh threw a follow-through ball towards Daryl Mitchell. The Kiwi batter was well inside the line and the throw seemed totally unnecessary. However, Arshdeep's throw hit Mitchell's pads, nowhere near the stumps, leading to an angry reaction from the batter.
Arshdeep Singh didn't engage with Mitchell but walked away without expressing any apology. The Indian bowler was spotted shaking hands with Mitchell after finishing his over and also issued an apology after the match, but it was not enough to escape the ICC's eye.
According to the ICC, the left-handed pacer was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
It was Arshdeep's first offence in the last 24 months, and the player accepted the fine proposed by the match referee, Andy Pycroft.
Arshdeep Singh opens up on his incident with Daryl Mitchell
After India registered a mammoth 96-run win while defending a 255-run total against New Zealand, Arshdeep Singh revealed that he apologized to Daryl Mitchell. He also added that his throw "reverse-swung", as it was not intentional.
“I went to say sorry to Mitchell. My throw reverse-swung a bit too much, and it hit his body, so I told him that I didn't hit him intentionally," Arshdeep said during the post-match presentation in Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, India's leading wicket-taker in T20Is had a mixed campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026. He managed only 9 wickets in 8 innings and proved costly, conceding 8.46 runs per over. In the final, Arshdeep was the only Indian bowler without a wicket but was impressive with his initial spell in the powerplay.
Arshdeep Singh's best performance in the recent World Cup came against Zimbabwe in the must-win Super Eight game. He gave India a breakthrough with Sikandar Raza's big wicket and wrapped up with two more wickets to register impressive 3 for 24 figures in Chennai.
