Suryakumar Yadav admitted his heart rate shot up to “160–175” during the nerve-wracking final overs as India edged past England national cricket team by seven runs to enter their second successive ICC Men's T20 World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

The defending champions posted a massive 253 before restricting England to 246/7 in a thrilling semifinal.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Suryakumar said during the post-match presentation. “Playing in India, leading such a wonderful side with the World Cup happening here and now going to Ahmedabad for the final, it’s special for all the boys.

“I was very nervous. My heart rate would have been around 160–175.”

India were powered by opener Sanju Samson, who smashed a blistering 42-ball 89, peppering the boundary with eight fours and seven sixes.

Shivam Dube (43), Ishan Kishan (39), Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21) also played brisk cameos to push India to a daunting total.

“I think he knew exactly what he wanted to do the moment he went in,” Suryakumar said of Samson. “Even when wickets fell, he knew the pitch was good and kept pressing the pedal.

“It was a special knock and due after all the hard work he’s put in over the last year.”

Despite the mammoth total, England kept themselves in the chase thanks to a sensational knock from Jacob Bethell, who blasted 105 off just 48 balls.

However, India’s bowlers held their nerve in the death overs. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a tight spell of 1/33, while Pandya claimed two wickets to help seal the victory.

“We all know what Bumrah is capable of and what he has done for India over the years,” Suryakumar said. “He raised his hand again today and showed character to pull the game away from them.

“The way Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and the others brought it back was unbelievable.”

Suryakumar also credited fielding coach T Dilip for the team’s improvement in the field.

“We need to give credit to T Dilip. The boys are responding really well and going the extra yard, and that’s showing.”

India will now face New Zealand national cricket team in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

“There will definitely be pressure and nerves, especially playing in India and going for the title,” Suryakumar said. “But the boys and the support staff are excited.”

England captain Harry Brook admitted his side fell short in the field and execution.

“We thought the pitch might hold and spin a bit early on, but it came nicely onto the bat and India batted really well,” Brook said.

“I’ll hold my hands up and say I made a big mistake dropping Samson. We weren’t good enough in the field and you can’t afford that against India.”

Brook, however, praised Bethell’s outstanding century.

“Bethell was absolutely unbelievable. He’ll earn some serious money. The way he took it on from ball one showed the world what he can do.

“We had a good tournament and should be proud of how we played. Unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong side.”
