In a massive development in the IPL, Rishabh Pant has officially stepped down as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants following a horrible IPL 2026 campaign for the franchise.

The announcement was made through Lucknow Super Giants’ official social media handles, where the franchise confirmed that Pant had requested to be relieved from his captaincy duties and the management had accepted his decision with immediate effect.

“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchise has accepted his request with immediate effect,” the franchise stated in its official release.

LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody also issued a statement regarding the development.

“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” Moody said.

Interestingly, the development comes at a time when multiple reports have also suggested that Hardik Pandya could be removed as the captain of Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2027.

This has now triggered massive speculation among fans on social media, with many discussing the possibility of a blockbuster trade deal where Hardik Pandya moving to LSG.

Several fans have already started reacting to the possibility of Pant moving to Mumbai Indians if the franchise decides to make major changes after their disappointing campaign.

Rishabh Pant endured nightmare stint with LSG

Rishabh Pant remained under heavy pressure throughout the IPL 2026 season and his frustration was clearly visible both during on-field moments and in one interaction in the tournament.

Under Pant’s leadership, LSG failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive season and this year things went from bad to worse. The franchise eventually finished at the bottom of the points table, managing only four wins in 14 matches.

Pant also struggled badly with the bat during the campaign. Despite arriving at the franchise with huge expectations, the left-handed wicketkeeper batter managed just 312 runs in IPL 2026. His IPL 2025 season was equally disappointing where he had scored only 269 runs.

The continuous dip in both his batting form and leadership results made things extremely difficult for the franchise throughout the tournament.

It is now quite evident that Rishabh Pant endured a nightmare phase with Lucknow Super Giants and both the player and the franchise would be desperately hoping to move forward positively from here.
