NEW DELHI: As the buzz around the iconic Ashes builds, Australia pace stalwart Mitchell Starc has urged curators to prepare lively pitches for the upcoming series rather than crafting tracks simply to stretch matches into the fifth day.

Starc urges wickets to favor a fair contest

Starc, known for his fearsome pace and experience in high-pressure contests, emphasised that the pitches should allow a fair contest between bat and ball, particularly against England’s ultra-aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach.

He pointed out that while Test matches lasting five days can generate more revenue than shorter games, financial considerations should not dictate pitch preparation.

"I hope the groundsmen stick to their guns and prepare the wickets they want. If we're worried about five days of revenue, then there are bigger problems at hand," Starc told Australian media.

The 35-year-old, who recently claimed four wickets for New South Wales on a slow Sydney Cricket Ground pitch, believes surfaces that assist bowlers are key to maintaining balance in Test cricket.

"Yeah, no doubt, especially if they're pretty docile wickets like this. We know the way they're trying to play their cricket. We'll worry about that next week," he added.

Starc also stressed that in recent years, administrators have leaned towards ensuring matches extend to the fifth day, often driven by ticket sales and broadcast commitments. He feels this approach undermines the competitiveness that makes Test cricket so revered by purists.

Looking ahead to Ashes 2025-26

The upcoming Ashes series, scheduled from December 10, 2025, to January 15, 2026, across five Tests in Australia, is expected to be a crucial contest for both sides. With momentum, pride, and the legacy of the Ashes at stake, Starc’s call for lively pitches highlights the need to preserve the competitive spirit of Test cricket while delivering exciting battles for fans.
