NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli, who has been in stellar form, endured a rare failure during the second ODI of the three-match series against New Zealand in Rajkot on Wednesday, getting out for 23 off 29 balls.

What grabbed attention, however, was the manner of his dismissal, which brought back memories of his wicket in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.

On the third delivery of the 24th over, Kiwi pacer Kristian Clarke bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off. Kohli attempted to guide it fine, but got a thick inside edge, and his middle stump was uprooted.

Kohli looked stunned by his wayward shot, pausing at the crease for a moment as he reflected on his shot selection.

For the first time in his last eight List-A innings, Kohli was dismissed for under 50. Prior to this, he had been in exceptional form, scoring 74 not out against Australia, 135 and 102 against South Africa, 65 not out versus South Africa again, 131 against Andhra, 77 against Gujarat, and 93 in the first ODI against New Zealand.

In the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad, Kohli got a big inside edge off a short-of-a-length delivery from Pat Cummins, sending the ball crashing into the stumps.
