Deepti Sharma, the Player of the Tournament at the Women’s ODI World Cup and newly appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Uttar Pradesh under the sports quota, was felicitated on Friday at the state Police Headquarters in Gomtinagar Extension.
Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna honoured Sharma in the presence of senior officials, commending her achievements on the global stage. “Deepti Sharma has not only made the country proud but has also brought glory to Uttar Pradesh and the state police force,” he said.
In his address, the DGP said India’s cricketing journey—from the men’s historic 1983 World Cup win to the women’s team defeating seven-time champions Australia—continues to motivate young girls nationwide. Sharma’s rise, he noted, will encourage more children to pursue sports.
Krishna also highlighted the Uttar Pradesh government’s sports-driven initiatives under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, pointing out that several elite athletes have joined the police force through the sports quota over the past four years. “International-level success demands discipline, hard work and strong willpower—qualities Deepti has consistently displayed,” he added.
The DGP urged children of police personnel present at the event to follow their ambitions with discipline and determination. He thanked Sharma’s family for being a pillar of support throughout her journey.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sharma said addressing the gathering at the Police Headquarters was a moment of immense pride. Joining the state police, wearing the uniform for the first time, and interacting with senior officers, she said, were unforgettable experiences.
Sharma acknowledged the outpouring of admiration she has received since the World Cup triumph, calling it a cherished honour for her family. She credited her success to their constant support, with a special mention of her elder brother Sumit Sharma for guiding her throughout her cricketing journey.
She also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for introducing policies that provide athletes with career opportunities and financial encouragement. Becoming a police officer, she said, fulfilled a long-held dream for her family.
Senior officers, including DG Training Rajeev Sabharwal, DG Cyber Crime/CB-CID Vinod Kumar Singh, and ADG Law & Order Amitabh Yash, were also present.
Earlier in the day, Sharma met Chief Minister Adityanath in Lucknow. At a separate briefing, Cabinet Minister Suresh Khanna said the state Cabinet had passed resolutions congratulating the Indian women’s team on its maiden World Cup win and extended special commendation to Sharma for her role in the historic triumph.
