Now comes the crunch time of IPL 2026, when who can play matters just as much to teams here as it does to India's bigger plans abroad. With every match tightening toward the playoffs, concerns about how club duties affect country needs rise all over again.
Though money drives leagues forward, national coaches watch closely at what fatigue might cost later. Each run scored now could mean less energy saved for global games soon after. While owners cheer their stars on, doctors track heartbeat patterns more than sixes hit. Behind bright lights and loud crowds lies a quieter struggle, one of timing, strain, and choices made far from cameras.
This moment shifts toward Kolkata Knight Riders, along with Varun Chakravarthy. Doubts have quietly surfaced in India's camp about KKR persisting with the unorthodox bowler amid ongoing worries tied to his physical condition. Attention grew sharper following KKR’s vital win by 29 runs against the Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Saturday, May 16, when the reigning titleholders took a firm step to keep their postseason hopes alive.
BCCI reportedly unhappy over Varun Chakravarthy’s workload
Officials in India have reacted poorly to the news, particularly because Chakravarthy is becoming more vital to the country's T20I strategy. His performance was key when India won the T20 World Cup in 2026, despite his age of 34. Still under contract with the BCCI, he continues to hold a central place in their setup.

Soon after the IPL ends, India will play matches in Ireland and England. His fitness is now a key concern for those running the team. Updates on the injured spinner have reportedly passed from KKR's medical team to Kamlesh Jain, who looks after players for India. Talks about his recovery are already happening behind the scenes.
“I know for a fact that KKR physio is in touch with Team India physio [Kamlesh Jain]. There has been communication from KKR to the BCCI that Varun injured his left foot while saving a boundary in a previous match. It is understood that he has a hairline fracture,” a BCCI official told PTI.
Later on, the spokesperson mentioned that Chakravarthy being under a central contract means his health down the line matters most. If things take a turn, support might come from the BCCI doctors.
“I believe as a centrally contracted player of the BCCI, his fitness is paramount, and the BCCI medical team could intervene. Jain might be asked what the input from the KKR medical team was,” the official added.
Even with fitness questions hanging around him, Chakravarthy still stands tall in KKR’s pace lineup. Bought in at 4 crore before the 2020 campaign began, his rise since then has been steady, now one of their go-to performers when games tilt.
109 wickets have come his way playing for KKR, all while keeping things tight - fewer than eight runs each over. This time around, body issues slowed him some, yet ten dismissals popped up across nine games. One stand-out moment that sharp 3/14 showing when Rajasthan Royals were batting early on.
We can expect close eyes on Chakravarthy’s playing time and rest, given Kolkata’s push toward a playoff spot alongside India’s need to manage key talent before big tournaments down the line.
