Chennai Super Kings’ woes have gone from bad to worse in IPL 2026 as their young sensation Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the entire season due to a hamstring injury. The setback comes at a time when the five-time champions are already struggling to find consistency.
Ayush Mhatre ruled out after hamstring injury against Sunrisers Hyderabad
Ayush Mhatre sustained the injury during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad a couple of days ago, bringing an abrupt end to what had been a breakthrough season for him.
In a recent social media post on X, Chennai Super Kings’ official handle confirmed the development, stating:
“Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush's injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks.”
Mhatre had been one of the few positives for CSK this season, scoring 201 runs at an explosive strike rate of 177.87 and showing remarkable composure at the top.
Michael Hussey admits big loss but hints at opportunity for others
Earlier in the press conference, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey spoke about the injury and admitted it is a major blow for the side.
“It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he's going to be a big, big loss because he's been in really nice touch for us,” Hussey said.
Hussey, however, added that the setback could open doors for others in the squad.
“He's an exciting young talent, but it's going to give someone else an opportunity. So that's exciting as well. We've got some really good players that haven't been able to get an opportunity. And so it's going to be exciting for one of those guys.
“So, as much as we're really disappointed to lose Ayush - I don't know how long for - it's exciting for a new player to come in and get a chance.”
Chennai Super Kings face mounting troubles in IPL 2026 campaign
CSK, the five-time champions, have been in serious trouble in IPL 2026, and this setback only adds to their growing concerns. They are currently placed eighth position of the points table with just two wins from six matches.
Both their batting and bowling units have failed to click consistently and with Mhatre now sidelined and MS Dhoni still unavailable, the team faces a significant challenge in finding the right balance moving forward.
