Young Ollie Peake now captains Australia's Under-19s, yet finds himself picked for the senior team for the very first time. This month, he joins the ODI lineup headed to Pakistan, a trip shaping up with fresh faces rather than familiar ones. Many top players are absent, pulled away by IPL duties or given rest before heavy Test months loom. His rise stands out, not just because of age, but timing, filling gaps others have left behind.

Out on tour against Pakistan and then Bangladesh, Australia loses Pat Cummins to injury, along with veteran quick Josh Hazlewood. Missing from the one-day games, too, is Mitchell Starc, who stepped away from T20 cricket earlier. With Cummins out, leadership shifts to Mitchell Marsh, already at the helm in T20s, to take charge of the ODI squad.

Young talent gets an opportunity in the transitional Australia squad

Some IPL cricketers from sides that missed the knockout stage - like Cameron Green and Josh Inglis - appear in every one of the three groups picked. On a different note, Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett stick with their Indian teams through the postseason, only linking up again later for the Bangladesh part of the trip.

Left out again, Glenn Maxwell plus Marcus Stoinis miss the trip to Bangladesh even though they’re fit and ready. Still no place for Steven Smith either when it comes to Australia’s T20 setup.
Liam Scott, the South Australian all-rounder, earns his first international nod alongside Joel Davies from the Sydney Sixers.

Though Scott lands spots in both ODI groups, Davies finds a place through different paths - Pakistan fixtures in the ODIs, then switching to Bangladesh for the T20 matches. First-time selections like these tend to arrive quietly, yet carry weight just the same.

Billy Stanlake bowls quickly for Tasmania, now back in the squad since his last game for Australia four years ago. On comes Matt Short too, but just for when they face Pakistan.
Among Australia’s young batters, Peake stands out - skipper of the Under-19 World Cup team back in January. Though steady form in first-class cricket remains a work in progress, national picks see what others might miss. Six times he's faced pro bowling across List A games for Victoria; twice, runs passed fifty without fuss. His scoring is faster than most, striking past 112 per hundred balls.

If Peake steps into Pakistan, having yet to hit his 20th birthday in September, just five teens prior would have worn Australia's ODI jersey, Hazlewood, Marsh, Cummins, among them.

After smashing runs all summer, Scott earns his spot. Victory tasted sweet in both the one-day and first-class trophies down under. The red-ball success came alongside white-hot form when the lights turned on in the city. Crowds roared as he lifted the BBL trophy high with Adelaide. Moments like these don’t come often; this year, they did.

George Bailey, who leads the selection panel, called these trips a chance for younger athletes to gain real experience.

“It’s always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket,” Bailey said. “The blend of experienced players and new faces provides a strong mix for these subcontinent tours.”
