Aiden Markram is set for an emotional reunion as he prepares to face his former side, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, for the first time when Durban’s Super Giants take them on at Kingsmead in Match 18 of Betway SA20 Season 4 on Friday.
Markram was the face of Sunrisers’ golden run in the league’s first three seasons, guiding the Eastern Cape outfit to back-to-back titles and a runners-up finish last season. However, a new chapter began for the Proteas T20 captain after he was snapped up by Durban’s Super Giants at the auction, marking the start of a fresh three-year cycle.
“New colours, new kit. It’s always exciting to start something new, especially at the beginning of a new cycle,” Markram said ahead of the clash.
During his time at Sunrisers, Markram built a strong working relationship with head coach Adrian Birrell. Now, he is forging a similar bond with Super Giants coach Lance Klusener, as the franchise looks to turn its season around.
“We didn’t know each other that well initially, but we spent some time together at the IPL, which was nice,” Markram said of Klusener.
“He’s someone you looked up to growing up. You remember all those World Cup moments and videos, he was always the guy delivering when it mattered. It’s been great getting to know him. He brings immense value both on and off the field, which is really exciting for us.”
Durban’s Super Giants currently sit fifth on the points table with just one win from six matches, including two washed-out games, leaving them with little margin for error in the race for the playoffs.
Despite the uphill task, Klusener remains confident that Markram’s calm leadership can inspire a turnaround, starting with a statement win against his former team on Friday.
