Asia Cup: Punjab Kings’ silent protest amid boycott calls, Pakistan’s name missing in social media post

NEW DELHI: Calls to boycott the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup match in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack continue to gain momentum, with IPL franchise Punjab Kings joining the chorus in a manner that left fans stunned. IPL 2025 runners-up Punjab Kings found a striking way to make their point, announcing India's second Asia Cup match on social media - but what stunned fans was the graphic, which avoided naming Pakistan as the opponent and kept the space as blank. As per a new policy announced by the government recently, India will not engage in any bilateral sporting contest with Pakistan but will continue to face the neighbours in multilateral tournaments such as the ongoing Asia Cup cricket tournament. "The government has made it very clear that we will not play bilaterals and only feature against Pakistan in multilateral tournaments. We are only following the government's advice," Dhumal said during a joint interaction with reporters at the Playcom Business of Sports Conclave. The Supreme Court on Thursday also declined an urgent hearing of a petition seeking cancellation of the match. "What is the urgency? It's a match, let it be. Match is this Sunday, what can be done? the bench observed. "Cricket between nations is meant to show harmony and friendship. But after the Phalagam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, when our people died and our soldiers risked everything, playing with Pakistan sent the opposite message that while our soldiers sacrificing their lives, we are celebrating sports with the same country sheltering terrorists (sic)," the plea submitted. The petitioners added, "It can also hurt the sentiments of the families of the victims who lost their lives in the hand of the Pakistani terrorist. The dignity of nation and security of citizens come before entertainment."
