Rohit Sharma’s availability in the MI vs PBKS clash is quite uncertain after the veteran batter suffered an injury, which eventually led him to retire hurt against RCB a couple of days ago.

There are still no official updates from the franchise, but according to reports, the scan results are not very encouraging. His return in the next game looks unlikely as Rohit may need some more time to recover.

That leaves Mumbai Indians with a big question to answer. Already struggling for rhythm this season, MI now have to rethink their combination if their captain is unavailable. So, who steps in to fill that massive gap at the top?

3 players who can step in as Rohit Sharma replacement for MI vs PBKS clash:

1. Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock can be the best choice for Mumbai Indians at the top in place of Rohit Sharma. The left-hand Proteas batter brings plenty of experience in the IPL and with over 3300 runs, he fits the role almost perfectly. Known for his aggressive style, de Kock can be a very dangerous customer on his day.

The 33-year-old has represented multiple franchises and has played some fine knocks over the years. His 140-run knock in IPL 2022 is still remembered as one of the finest innings. But for this move to happen, MI will have to adjust their overseas combination. Either Mitchell Santner or Trent Boult might have to sit out to free up a slot.

2. Naman Dhir

Another player who can open the batting in Rohit Sharma's place is Naman Dhir. He has already been part of Mumbai Indians’ playing XI in the previous game, so he is not new to the setup. And he can open the innings as well if required.

The 26-year-old has featured in 27 IPL matches and has scored 451 runs at a strike rate of over 176. That kind of intent at the top can really help MI, especially against a Punjab Kings bowling attack that has been doing well this season.

3. Robin Minz

The third option is Robin Minz. The left-hand batter from Jharkhand is still quite raw but has shown promise in the domestic circuit. He was bought by Gujarat Titans for INR 3.60 crore in IPL 2024 and later picked by Mumbai Indians for INR 65 lakh in IPL 2025.

Minz has not had many chances so far and has featured in only 7 T20 matches. But he has shown glimpses of his ability. There is raw power in his game, some unorthodox shots like the helicopter and a fearless approach with the bat.

Mumbai Indians look to bounce back after poor start to IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians have not had the best start to their IPL 2026 campaign. After winning their opening game against KKR, the team lost track and went off track, losing three consecutive matches. Now sitting ninth on the points table with just two points, the five-time champions are desperate to bounce back, most likely without Rohit Sharma, and get their season on track.
