Discussions surrounding Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya have intensified after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, with multiple reports suggesting that the all-rounder could be removed from the leadership role ahead of IPL 2027.
According to a PTI report, an IPL source claimed that Hardik was mentally exhausted during the season and was also struggling with a back injury. “Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He had also sustained a back injury. In fact, once the play-off hopes were dashed, Hardik informed the decision-makers that he wouldn't be staying back,” the source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
IPL 2026 turned out to be a disastrous campaign for the five-time champions as Mumbai Indians finished ninth in the points table. Their batting, bowling and overall team combination came heavily under scrutiny throughout the season. Hardik, who took over the captaincy in 2024, has failed to deliver a single IPL title so far for one of the most successful franchises in tournament history.
With reports now suggesting that Mumbai Indians could look for a new captain from IPL 2027 onwards, here are three players who can potentially take over the leadership role next season.
Here are three players who can replace Hardik Pandya as MI's captain:
1. Jasprit Bumrah
The first and foremost name that comes to mind is Jasprit Bumrah, the legendary fast bowler of Mumbai Indians. Despite his stellar record in the T20 format, Bumrah endured a shocking IPL 2026 season where he struggled badly for wickets - something the cricketing fraternity would have never expected from a player of his calibre.
In 13 matches, Bumrah managed to pick up only four wickets at a pathetic average of 102.5. While his form with the ball was concerning, his leadership credentials still make him one of the strongest contenders for the captaincy role. Bumrah has already captained the Indian Test side on multiple occasions and also made his IPL captaincy debut this season.
Given his massive experience at both domestic and international levels, Bumrah certainly looks like an ideal candidate to lead Mumbai Indians. However, there remains one major concern — his injury history. Bumrah has often found himself sidelined due to recurring injuries, and that could become a serious headache for Mumbai Indians if their captain misses a significant part of the season. A captain being unavailable midway through a tournament can completely disturb the balance and planning of the side.
So while Bumrah remains a brilliant option in terms of leadership quality and experience, his prolonged injury concerns could force Mumbai Indians to explore other long-term alternatives as well.
2. Suryakumar Yadav
The second name on the list is Suryakumar Yadav, the World Cup-winning captain who recently guided India to a record third ICC title on home soil. Suryakumar has built a strong reputation as a captain and has already led the Indian side into a dominant era where they have not just beaten opponents but completely crushed them, both at home and away.
When it comes to leadership qualities and tactical understanding of T20 cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has been absolute gold. However, a major concern surrounding him is his batting form over the last year or so.
Widely regarded as one of the most consistent T20 batters of this generation, Suryakumar has struggled badly in both international cricket and the IPL recently. Apart from the T20 World Cup, he has not been able to score runs consistently. His IPL 2026 numbers were especially disappointing considering the standards he has set over the years.
In 13 matches this season, Suryakumar managed only 270 runs at an average of around 20. Moreover, age could also become a factor for Mumbai Indians while planning for the future. At 35 years old, Suryakumar may not fit the long-term leadership vision that the franchise could be aiming for.
Mumbai Indians previously enjoyed a long and successful captaincy era under Rohit Sharma, who led the franchise to five IPL titles, and the management may now prefer another long-term option capable of carrying forward that legacy for years to come.
3. Tilak Varma
The third and perhaps the most promising option is Tilak Varma.
Tilak was one of the very few bright positives for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. Batting in the middle order, he played several crucial knocks during the campaign, including a memorable match-winning century. Despite the team’s poor overall performance, Tilak consistently showcased maturity, composure and responsibility with the bat.
Having been part of Mumbai Indians since 2022, Tilak already understands the team’s strategies, environment and overall game plans thoroughly. He has grown within the franchise setup and is now also becoming a regular member of the Indian national team setup.
At just 23 years of age, Tilak Varma could become the long-term leadership prospect Mumbai Indians have been searching for. In IPL 2026, he scored 359 runs in 14 matches at an average of nearly 30, emerging as one of the few dependable performers in an otherwise forgettable campaign for the franchise.
If Mumbai Indians are indeed planning to move on from Hardik Pandya as captain ahead of IPL 2027, Tilak Varma might just be the perfect player to carry forward the legacy of one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
