Joe Root is currently on top of the world, but he’s also starting to feel the weight of time. After smashing a brilliant 160 in the Sydney Test, the 35-year-old looks like he could bat forever. He’s already reached 41 centuries, and with his incredible form, fans everywhere are wondering if he will finally overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary Test run record. But even as he closes in on history, Joe Root is being very honest about how much gas is left in the tank.
During a recent reflection on his long career and the constant pressure of the Ashes, the England legend admitted, “I don't know how much is left for me.” It was a rare, vulnerable moment from a man who has carried England’s batting on his back for over a decade.
Speaking about the tough battle at the SCG, Joe Root explained just how hard it was out there. “It felt like yesterday was much batting, and it was much trickier today. It was about making sure to maximise that first innings, look at the surface and see how it plays out with time. It was pleasing and got it right to a degree today,” he stated.
Joe Root knows he is likely in the final chapter of his career. He isn’t just playing for personal glory anymore; he’s trying to help the next generation. He noted, “When you have played as long as I have, you are going to experience a lot of different things, and one thing I look at is opportunities. I do not know how many opportunities I am going to get to come here. It was great to win at MCG, and it was another opportunity today to help us get into a position of strength and try replicating that feeling once again for the group.”
