George Munsey starred with a blistering half-century as Scotland outclassed T20 World Cup debutants Italy by 73 runs in their Group clash here on Monday.

Munsey smashed 84 off 54 balls and combined with Michael Jones (37 off 30) in a dominant 126-run opening partnership that laid the platform for Scotland’s imposing total of 207 for 4.

Brandon McMullen provided the late flourish with an unbeaten 41, ensuring Scotland posted a total well beyond Italy’s comfort zone.

In reply, Italy showed commendable fight despite the daunting target. Ben Manenti struck a counter-attacking 62, while brother Harry Manenti added 37 as the pair stitched together a 73-run stand for the fourth wicket. However, a lack of depth and experience told in the end, with Italy bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs.

Scotland’s bowlers were clinical, led by off-spinner Michael Leask, who ripped through the Italian batting with figures of 4 for 17. Mark Watt provided solid support, picking up 2 for 24.

Italy’s struggles were compounded by an injury to captain Wayne Madsen, who was forced off the field in visible pain after diving to stop a boundary in the fourth over of Scotland’s innings. The 42-year-old left the ground with his left arm in a makeshift sling, casting doubt over his availability going forward.

Brief scores:
Scotland 207/4 in 20 overs (George Munsey 84, Michael Jones 37, Brandon McMullen 41*; Grant Stewart 1/21, JJ Smuts 1/38)
Italy 134 all out in 16.4 overs (Ben Manenti 62; Michael Leask 4/17, Mark Watt 2/24)
