NEW DELHI: Records are meant to be broken when Virat Kohli is on the field, and the star India batter has another milestone in his sights when he will be in action in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11.
Kohli is on the verge of yet another landmark, with a long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar firmly within reach. The Indian great requires just 25 more runs to bring up 28,000 international runs, a milestone that would further cement his place among cricket's all-time elite.
Virat Kohli to play third Vijay Hazare match ahead of New Zealand series
If achieved, Kohli is set to become only the third batter in history to cross the mark, joining Tendulkar and former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara. What makes the feat even more remarkable is the speed at which Kohli is likely to get there.
Tendulkar reached 28,000 runs across 644 innings, while Sangakkara took 666. Kohli, already on 27,975 runs from just 623 innings, is poised to eclipse that record and become the fastest to the milestone, with the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand expected to be the stage for yet another chapter in his record-breaking career.
Kohli is also expected to become the second-highest run-scorer in international cricket, as he needs 41 runs to go past Sangakkara's tally of 28,016 runs.
The former captain also became the fastest to 16,000 List A runs by reaching the milestone in his 330th innings, surpassing Tendulkar, who touched the landmark in 391 innings.
