NEW DELHI: India endured a difficult batting outing despite a lone act of resistance from skipper Suryakumar Yadav, slumping to a below-par 161 for 9 after a dramatic collapse against a spirited USA side in their T20 World Cup match in Mumbai on Saturday.

Walking into crisis early, Suryakumar chose a measured approach before gradually switching gears, anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls. His knock, decorated with 10 fours and four sixes, stood in stark contrast as wickets kept tumbling at the other end.

India’s innings unravelled rapidly, with the scoreboard reading a grim 77 for 6 in the 13th over. USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk led the charge with a devastating spell of 4 for 25, ripping through the middle order. The 37-year-old struck three times in a punishing sixth over, removing Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube in quick succession.

The rot had set in earlier when Ali Khan dismissed opener Abhishek Sharma for a first-ball duck, triggering a collapse from which India never truly recovered. Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya failed to provide support, while Axar Patel showed brief resistance before falling for 14.

USA had earlier won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that paid rich dividends as their bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.

India were also without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the match due to illness, with Mohammed Siraj drafted into the playing XI in his place.
