NEW DELHI: Yashasvi Jaiswal suffered heartbreak early on the second day of the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi on Saturday. What seemed like an easy opportunity to convert his innings into a double hundred ended in disappointment, as he was run out in unfortunate fashion for 175.

Jaiswal could add just a couple of runs to his overnight tally of 173 before a huge mix-up with captain Shubman Gill in the middle gifted the West Indies an easy wicket.

The incident unfolded in the 92nd over when Jaiswal drove the ball to mid-off and instantly set off for a single. However, Gill showed no interest and sent him back.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul moved a step to his right and threw the ball to the keeper's end, from where Jaiswal had taken off and found himself stranded three-fourths of the way down the pitch. By then, it was too late for him to make his ground.

The entire episode left Jaiswal in disbelief, as he had been well on course for another double hundred. Social media was quick to react, dissecting the mix-up and even pointing out Jaiswal's role in the unfortunate dismissal.

Jaiswal's 175-run innings now ranks among the highest individual scores by Indian batsmen who were dismissed via run-out.

At the top of the list is Sanjay Manjrekar's 218 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1989, followed by Rahul Dravid’s 217 at The Oval in 2002 and his 180 in Kolkata in 2001.

Jaiswal's effort slots in fourth, surpassing Vijay Hazare's 155 against England in 1951 and Dravid's 144 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 2009.
