What exactly happened in the middle
The moment came in the 16th over when Axar was bowling to Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell made room and went hard at a half-volley on the stumps, lofting the ball straight down the ground. Axar stuck out his left hand to stop it but the ball struck the end of his fingers and flew away for a boundary.
Axar was seen shaking his hand right after the impact. The physio rushed in to check on him and after a short assessment, Axar walked off the field. Abhishek Sharma was then called in to complete the remaining deliveries of the over.
Mixed outing with the ball for Axar
Before walking off, Axar had bowled 3.3 overs on a batting-friendly surface and conceded 42 runs. He did manage to pick up one important wicket, that of Glenn Phillips, who was looking extremely dangerous after smashing 78 runs off just 40 balls.
That breakthrough proved crucial and played a key role in keeping India ahead in the contest at a time when New Zealand were threatening to take the game deep.
With Axar Patel already off the field, concern remains over the extent of the injury. Fans and teammates will be hoping it is nothing serious. Further clarity is expected once the BCCI or the Indian team management releases an official update.
