NEW DELHI: Swashbuckling India batter Tilak Varma is set to receive clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after making a successful comeback from a groin injury.
A BCCI source told PTI on Saturday that Tilak is likely to be released from the CoE and will join the Indian team in Mumbai on February 3. The development comes as a major boost for the side just days before the T20 World Cup begins across venues in India and Sri Lanka from February 7.
“He has regained full match fitness,” the source said.
After undergoing surgery for the groin injury on January 7, Varma has been training at the CoE. He was scheduled to take part in a simulation match on Friday as part of the final assessment before getting fitness clearance.
The update means the 23-year-old batter is expected to be available for selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Once cleared, Varma is likely to link up with the Indian squad for the warm-up matches ahead of the marquee tournament.
He is set to make his return to the national side after missing the recent T20 series against New Zealand, where Shreyas Iyer was drafted in as his replacement.
Defending champions India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against the USA on the opening day of the tournament.
