NEW DELHI: An unusual and rarely seen moment unfolded during the second match of the Big Bash League 2025-26 between Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat.

Pakistan quick Shaheen Afridi found himself at the centre of attention after being forced out of the attack mid over due to a rarely enforced playing condition.

Height no balls trigger immediate action

The drama began in the 18th over when Shaheen Afridi was bowling for Melbourne Renegades. On the third delivery he sent down a high full toss that rose above waist height, forcing the umpire to call a no ball.

Things quickly went from bad to worse. On the fifth ball of the same over, Afridi again bowled a high full toss, this time to Oliver Peake. The batter missed it and the ball ran away for byes.

This was the second dangerous high no ball from Afridi in the innings. As per the rules, the umpires immediately removed him from the attack, ending his spell on the spot.

What the rule says

According to the laws, any full toss above waist height without bouncing is deemed dangerous. A bowler is allowed only one such delivery in an innings.

If a second beamer is bowled, as in Shaheen Afridi’s case, the bowler must be withdrawn immediately and cannot bowl again for the rest of the innings.

Afridi’s tough outing summed up

It turned into a night to forget for Afridi. He bowled just 2.4 overs and conceded 43 runs without taking a wicket, finishing with an economy rate of 16.10.

Earlier, Tim Seifert had already taken control with a sensational innings. He smashed 102 runs from just 56 balls, bringing up his century in style.

Oliver Peake then provided the finishing touch with a rapid 57 off 29 deliveries as Melbourne Renegades posted a strong 212 for 5 in 20 overs.
