NEW DELHI: Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has turned down an offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board to take on the role of "Consultant International and Players Affairs", explaining that the demands of international cricket would prevent him from committing fully to the position.
The PCB had extended the proposal last month, assuring Masood that the consultancy role would eventually transition into a permanent director-level appointment once he retired from playing. Notably, the offer marked an unprecedented move by the board, with a serving Test skipper being considered for an administrative post.
However, Masood opted against accepting the assignment, stressing that balancing leadership duties on the field alongside off-field responsibilities would compromise his effectiveness.
The board had identified him as an ideal candidate given his academic credentials and experience in management, but the opener chose to remain focused solely on his playing career for now.
A source close to the player said that after giving it much thought, Masood had conveyed to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi that he wouldn't be able to do justice to both the responsibilities.
"Shan pointed out that Pakistan had a tight Test schedule in 2026 and 2027 leading up to the ICC World Test Championship, and he wanted to do his best and focus on helping the team reach the final," the source said.
He said Masood had requested Naqvi to allow him to focus on his cricket responsibilities, and he would be open to working with the PCB after he steps down from cricket.
The source said that the PCB had put the offer on hold and let the existing staff handle the affairs.
"In all likelihood Usman Wahla, who was suspended during the Asia Cup as Director International Cricket Affairs and restored, and then given responsibilities in the Pakistan Super League secretariat, will look after the department until a final decision is made."
