As Messi soaked in the atmosphere, chants of “Mumbai cha Raja, Rohit Sharma; India cha Raja, Rohit Sharma” echoed across the Wankhede, briefly shifting the spotlight to India’s ODI captain and underlining the city’s deep cricketing heartbeat.
The evening became even more memorable when Messi shared a moment with Tendulkar, a meeting that symbolised the coming together of two global sporting eras. Tendulkar later described Messi’s visit as a “golden moment” for Mumbai and the country.
“I’ve spent some incredible moments here. Mumbai is a city of dreams, and many dreams have reached their destination at this very venue,” Tendulkar said, recalling India’s 2011 World Cup triumph at Wankhede. “Without the support of the people, those golden moments would not have been possible.”
Drawing a parallel between that historic night and Messi’s visit, Tendulkar added, “Today, having all three of them here is indeed a golden moment for Mumbai, Mumbaikars and India. The way the city has welcomed these greats has been truly remarkable.”
Speaking about Messi, Tendulkar chose admiration over analysis. “When it comes to Leo, this isn’t even the platform to talk about his game. What does one say about him? He has achieved everything. We admire his dedication, determination and commitment.”
Mumbai, for one evening, witnessed a celebration that transcended sport, where football royalty, cricketing legacy and the roar of the crowd came together in unforgettable fashion.
