NEW DELHI: A surprising yet positive moment unfolded in the Big Bash League on Sunday during the clash between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers.
After the Sixers’ earlier game, there was massive anticipation about a possible rift between two cricketing greats, Babar Azam and Steve Smith, following their single-row incident, but what followed this time told a very different story.

The moment came in the fifth over of the first innings. Sean Abbott bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off to Nathan McSweeney, who cut the ball hard. It flew quickly towards backward point where Steve Smith was standing slightly closer than usual.
Smith went for the catch using a reverse cup above his head, but the ball slipped through. A rare drop from one of the finest fielders of this era.
What followed caught everyone’s attention. Babar Azam immediately ran up to Smith and gave him a consolatory pat.
What exactly happened?
A few days earlier during the Sydney Thunder vs Sydney Sixers match. That was when Steve Smith denied Babar Azam a single as he wanted full control of the Power Surge.
The Power Surge is a new feature introduced in the BBL where the batting side can choose a two-over phase after the initial Powerplay, during which only two fielders are allowed outside the inner circle.
Smith wanted to make the most of that phase. Babar clearly wasn’t happy. After getting out, he looked frustrated and even smashed his bat on the boundary rope while walking back to the pavilion.
Smith later confirmed in the post-match presentation that neither of them was pleased with how the situation unfolded.
