NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli is back in Australia, and the former India captain shared his thoughts and memories during a conversation with Adam Gilchrist and Ravi Shastri on Fox Cricket on the sidelines of the first ODI in Perth on Sunday.
Kohli recalled his fondness for Perth, where he has enjoyed some of his most memorable cricketing moments, including his 30th and final Test century. "It's always lovely to be back in Australia, a place where I've really enjoyed my cricket," he said. "Hard-fought cricket over so many years, so many battles… eventually, I realized that if you play competitively and give it your all, even against the opposition, you earn their respect. That's what I experienced here."
Perth's relaxed atmosphere and quality wickets also left an impression on the Indian star. "I love coming here - it's a really nice, relaxed place with beautiful wickets, pace, and bounce that I always enjoy," he added.

Kohli also spoke about his time away from international cricket since retiring from Tests, describing it as a refreshing and much-needed break. "It's been a long time off for me, and I've really enjoyed catching up on life," he said. "Spending quality time with my kids and family has been beautiful. After years of constant cricket, it's been a refreshing phase."
Reflecting on his relationship with Australian cricket and crowds, Kohli explained why the country has always brought out the best in him. "Growing up, watching cricket in Australia, seeing the ball flying off the pitch, seeing the opposition right in your face - I thought, if I could perform here, that would be something to be really proud of," he said.
He recalled the challenges of his early tours: "It's quite tough at first. It's easier to watch on TV than to be part of that hostile environment. But I'm very grateful for those experiences. They shaped me as a cricketer and as a person, testing my mental strength and resilience."
Kohli also reflected on the respect he has earned from Australian crowds over the years. "Initially, I didn't understand it. But players like Kevin Pietersen told me that while it feels like they're at you all the time, they genuinely appreciate competitive cricket. That taught me to play fearlessly and gave me confidence. Performing in hostile conditions forced me to be 120% focused, and I thrived because of it," he said.
Despite the intensity on the field, Kohli noted the warmth off it. "When I'm not competing, people have been relaxed and respectful. Walking down the street, you see genuine smiles and words of appreciation. I've really enjoyed my time here - both on and off the field," he concluded.
