NEW DELHI: Star India batter Virat Kohli is on the verge of making history as he prepares to return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after a gap of 15 years. Whenever Kohli walks out to bat, records tend to follow, and Delhi's clash against Andhra on Wednesday in Bengaluru presents him with another opportunity to rewrite the record books.
Kohli, who smashed back-to-back centuries in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa and was named Player of the Series after scoring 302 runs, is just one run away from joining legendary Sachin Tendulkar in List A cricket.
Former India captain Virat Kohli will become only the second Indian batter, after Sachin Tendulkar, to score 16,000 runs in the history of List A cricket if he scores even a single run against Andhra on Wednesday.
In List A cricket, Sachin leads the charts with 21,999 runs in 538 innings. Following him is Kohli, who has amassed 15,999 runs in 329 innings, while Sourav Ganguly has scored 15,622 runs in 421 innings. Rohit Sharma has accumulated 13,758 runs in 338 innings, and Shikhar Dhawan has tallied 12,074 runs in 298 innings.
Can Ro-Ko fire?
Alongside Kohli, Rohit Sharma will also feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, turning out for Mumbai in their first two matches against Sikkim and Uttarakhand in Jaipur on December 24 and 26.
While both Kohli and Rohit still have the luxury of picking and choosing their games, the same cannot be said for their destiny.
A lackluster performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy may not directly affect their selection for the upcoming ODIs against New Zealand next month, but both stars are well aware that the margin for error is narrowing and the space around them is steadily shrinking.
