NEW DELHI: Former India pacer Varun Aaron has explained what is going wrong for Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, a format he once completely dominated. The Indian captain has struggled badly in 2025 and his poor run has led to questions around his form and confidence.
Speaking on Star Sports, Aaron said that Surya is committing too early at the crease and not giving himself enough time to read the conditions, especially on slower Indian wickets.
“I think he is trying to play his lap shot too early. He is trying to take the ball from outside the off stump and go to the on side too early. If you look at his dismissals over the last one year, I think in India his record has not been good because the wickets have been a lot slower.”
He also pointed out how bowlers have clearly identified a pattern and are using pace-off deliveries to trouble the Indian batter in the powerplay.
“A lot of the bowlers used pace-off balls. Among the eight times he has got out in the powerplay, four of them were to pace-off balls and that’s something which has plagued Surya through his career.”
In 2025, Suryakumar Yadav has managed only 218 runs in 19 innings at an average of 13.60 with a strike rate of 123. Despite the numbers, Surya remains one of the finest T20I batters India has ever produced.
Known for his unorthodox strokeplay and ability to dominate attacks across the world, he will be keen to find his touch again with the T20 World Cup getting closer.
