NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday announced a special cash reward of 10 million rupees for each member of Pakistan’s Under-19 Asia Cup-winning squad.

Pakistan’s youngsters outplayed India by a massive 191-run margin on Sunday to clinch the title in emphatic fashion.

Sharif made the announcement during a reception held for the players and team officials in Islamabad, where he praised the squad for their dominant performance in the tournament.

Team mentor and manager Sarfaraz Ahmed later confirmed the decision while speaking to the media after the event, stating that the Prime Minister had approved a cash award of 10 million rupees, approximately USD 36,000, for every player.

Sarfaraz also said he was thoroughly enjoying his role with the team and felt privileged to work with a group of highly talented youngsters who have a bright future ahead in the game.

Head coach Shahid Anwar attributed the title win to a detailed and well-planned selection process that focused on long-term preparation and exposure to 50-over cricket.

“The process started in June when we picked around 70 players after trials and then reduced the number to 20. Most of these players were then given chances to play 50-over cricket at domestic level,” Anwar, a former Test batsman, said.

Meanwhile, the announcement sparked sharp reactions on social media, where Pakistan faced heavy trolling from netizens. Many users mocked the celebrations, comparing the reaction to that of winning an ICC ODI World Cup, while also pointing out Pakistan’s repeated defeats to India across major tournaments.
