NEW DELHI: Travis Head completely flipped the script on Saturday, producing one of the most memorable centuries in Ashes history as Australia stormed to an eight-wicket win with three days still remaining in the first Test.

Promoted to open after Usman Khawaja suffered an injury, Head countered England's aggressive "Bazball" approach with a brutal display of strokeplay, reaching his hundred off just 69 deliveries.

Across five sessions in Perth, fast bowlers dominated as 30 wickets tumbled for just 468 runs in 113 overs - 19 falling on a chaotic opening day and another 11 before tea on Day 2.

Chasing 205 for victory, Head seized control from the outset, smashing 123 from 83 balls in a blistering knock that included 16 fours and four sixes, sending the ball to all corners of the ground and leaving England shell-shocked.

He was caught in the outfield trying to rush to victory, with Australia needing just 13 runs to win at 192-2.

Marnus Labuschagne leveled the scores with a six and was unbeaten on 51 when Australia reached 205-2.

The second Test in the five-match series starts Dec. 4 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Australia extended their unbeaten run in home Ashes Tests to 16, with 14 victories and two draws since losing the 2010-11 series.
