NEW DELHI: Star India batter Smriti Mandhana was left shell-shocked by her dismissal off a delivery that had initially been called wide by the on-field umpire during the ICC Women's World Cup semifinal against Australia in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.

The unfortunate incident unfolded in the 10th over, when Kim Garth bowled one down the leg side. Smriti attempted a glance but missed, and the umpire immediately signalled a wide. However, Australian skipper Alyssa Healy showed sharp cricketing acumen, opting to review the decision after a brief discussion with her teammates.

Smriti appeared untroubled as the review played out - until UltraEdge came up. A faint spike appeared just as the ball passed the bat - the barest of spikes, the barest of margins - and the third umpire asked the on-field umpire to overturn the decision.

A stunned Smriti shook her head in disbelief as she trudged back to the dressing room, while the Australians erupted in celebration.

However, Smriti's 24-run knock made her only the second Indian batter after Mithali Raj - and the 10th overall - to complete 1,000 runs against Australia in Women's ODIs.
