Team India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about his poor form in the Asia Cup 2025. He has been unable to display his consistent performance in the international outings after he assumed the captaincy. His first two series as a captain had mediocre numbers in the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka series; the South Africa series saw a dip in his numbers.
Suryakumar's performance in the last 16 matches of T20I has not been up to the mark, as he has only scored 30 runs in one of those games and accumulated just 126 runs with a poor average of 10.5. He is then maintaining great contrast with his successful 2025 IPL season, where he scored an unbelievable total of 717 runs with a staggering 65.18 average. But the injury and surgery again to the same ankle have prevented the 34-year-old player from converting his domestic form to international one. The rough patch that he is going through has not diminished his optimism and he keeps on saying that his belief in the preparation and the process will eventually be rewarded.
“It was like Jenga”: Suryakumar Yadav on India’s T20I selection puzzle
Speaking on journalist Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel, Suryakumar addressed both his form and India’s recent team dynamics. “There is no shame in telling the truth. I started the Asia Cup well with a 40-odd not out, but then the runs just didn’t come,” he said. “As long as my preparation is right, the results will follow. If my form begins to affect the team, then I’ll worry. But the atmosphere is good, and I can’t let my struggles impact that.”
He also shed light on the selection dilemma ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup, particularly around the opening combination and wicketkeeper slot. With Shubman Gill returning as vice-captain, Sanju Samson’s position was under scrutiny. “It was like Jenga,” Suryakumar explained. “We told Sanju that his role might change, but his impact must stay the same.” Samson made the most of his limited chances, scoring a fifty against Oman and valuable cameos against Sri Lanka and Pakistan matches
