Former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer Akshu Fernando passed away on Tuesday, nearly eight years after suffering life-threatening injuries in a tragic railway accident that left him in a coma. He was 25.
Fernando had remained in critical condition since December 28, 2018, when he was struck by a train while crossing an unprotected railway track near Mount Lavinia Beach. The accident occurred as he was returning from a team running session, resulting in severe head trauma and multiple fractures. He was placed on life support immediately and remained under continuous medical care, with his family standing by him throughout his prolonged battle.

The passing of the young cricketer was confirmed by a leading Sri Lankan newspaper, quoting international commentator Roshan Abeysinghe, who paid an emotional tribute.
“Just heard the sad news that Akshu Fernando has passed away. He was a wonderful young man whose promising career was cruelly cut short. A quality player for his school and his final club Ragama, he was cheerful, friendly and a true gentleman. We will remember him for the rest of our lives. Rest in peace, sweet prince,” Abeysinghe said.
At the time of the accident, Fernando was regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young talents. He represented the country at the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he impressed, particularly in the semifinal against Australia. His 52 in that match was Sri Lanka’s highest score, though the team narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
A product of St Peter’s College, Colombo, Fernando enjoyed a distinguished school cricket career. He captained the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams and served as vice-captain of the Under-19 side. His performances earned him opportunities at leading domestic clubs, including Colts Sports Club, Panadura Sports Club, Chilaw Marians and Ragama Sports Club.
His final competitive outing came just two weeks before the accident, when he scored an unbeaten 102 against Moors Sports Club on December 14, 2018.
Fernando’s passing brings to an end a long and painful chapter marked by immense physical and emotional struggle. It also serves as a poignant reminder of a gifted cricketing career that many believed was destined for the highest level.
