The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team departed for India on Wednesday ahead of their five-match T20I series against the reigning ODI world champions, beginning December 21.

The series marks Sri Lanka’s first assignment against India since the hosts clinched their maiden global title. The opening two matches will be played in Visakhapatnam on December 21 and 23, while the remaining three fixtures are scheduled to take place in Thiruvananthapuram on December 26, 28 and 30.

Led by captain Chamari Athapaththu, the Sri Lankan squad features a blend of experienced players and young talent, with the selectors opting for significant changes following a disappointing World Cup campaign. Several senior players have been left out as part of the team’s rebuilding process.

Vice-captain Anushka Sanjeewani, along with Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Dassanayake and Achini Kulasuriya, have been dropped from the squad. In Sanjeewani’s absence, Kaushani Nuthyangana is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties.

Teenage spinner Shashini Gimhani, 17, has earned a recall to the side, while 19-year-old medium pacer Rashmika Sewwandi has also been included as Sri Lanka look to bolster their bowling attack.
