NEW DELHI: Smriti Mandhana may have endured a lean patch in the Women's ODI World Cup so far, but the star India batter etched her name in the record books with a 23-run knock against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

Mandhana became the leading run-scorer in a calendar year in Women's ODIs, surpassing Australian Belinda Clark's 970 runs in 1997. She is now on the cusp of becoming the first woman batter to cross the 1,000-run mark in a single year.

Mandhana currently has 982 runs in 17 matches at an average of 57.76, including four centuries and three fifties.

After being put into bat by South Africa, Mandhana reached the milestone when she sent Ayabonga Khaka's delivery straight down the ground for a big six on the first ball of the 8th over. However, she couldn't build on it and was dismissed by Nonkululeko Mlaba in the 11th over.

Mandhana already holds the record for the most centuries in a calendar year, having scored four hundreds in two separate years. She could further extend this record if she manages another three-figure score this year.

In addition, Mandhana set a remarkable Indian record across formats and genders when she recorded the fastest ODI century (50 balls) by an Indian in the 50-over format, surpassing Virat Kohli's previous mark set in 2013.
