NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma's future as ODI captain seems to be in doldrums, with talks in Indian cricketing circles suggesting that Test skipper Shubman Gill's appointment as 50-overs captain is imminent.

As per RevSportz, Gill is set to succeed Rohit as India's ODI captain, with an official announcement from the BCCI expected soon. At present, Gill faces no competition for the role, making him the frontrunner to take charge of the 50-over side.

Gill's appointment as India's Test captain has proven successful, with his stellar performances making him the standout player in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.

Rohit's upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia could well be his final assignment for India as captain, if not as a player. With the 2027 ODI World Cup in focus, the BCCI selection committee is eager to hand over the reins to a new skipper, allowing enough time for grooming and stability ahead of the marquee tournament.

While Gill continues his preparations for the Asia Cup 2025, Rohit has resumed strength and conditioning work under the guidance of his long-time friend and coach, Abhishek Nayar.

The Indian ODI skipper last featured in competitive cricket during the IPL 2025. Recently, Rohit also cleared the BCCI's pre-season fitness assessments conducted at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
