NEW DELHI: Team India captain Shubman Gill, who was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for a neck injury, is likely to travel to Guwahati with the team for the second Test against South Africa, beginning Saturday (November 22), TimesofIndia reported.

Gill suffered the injury while batting on the second day of the game, was ruled out of the first Test before the start of the third day's play at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He was not available to bat in the second innings when India were shot out for 93.

Eden fiasco reignites the big question: Are Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir on the same page?

According to the original schedule, the team is scheduled to fly to Guwahati on Wednesday, and although nothing has been finalised, Gill may join them on that flight.

If that doesn't happen, the skipper could make the trip a day later, on Thursday. The 26-year-old is still being assessed by the BCCI's medical staff and, provided no last-minute concerns emerge, he is expected to link up with the squad ahead of the second and final Test.

That said, Gill's availability is far from guaranteed. His chances currently stand at an even 50-50, with a final decision expected in the coming days. For now, doctors have advised complete rest, and he remains under close observation.

Gill was stretchered into an ambulance to be admitted to a hospital on Saturday evening with his neck immobilised, hours after retiring hurt in India's first innings.

The Indian captain felt pain in his neck immediately after executing a sweep for four off South Africa spinner Simon Harmer, and had left the field after receiving some initial treatment from the team's medical staff.

India's assistant coach Morne Morkel blamed it on bad night's "sleep and not his workload”.

"Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night's sleep. I don't think it's, or we can put it down to the (work) load," Morkel told the media after day two.
