NEW DELHI: Shreyas Iyer underwent surgery for a spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday, Cricbuzz reported. The star batter is on the path to recovery and is no longer in the ICU at a Sydney hospital.
Iyer will need to rest for at least five days to a week after undergoing what was described as a minor surgical procedure. The BCCI and the Indian team management in Australia, who had assigned him a doctor, are closely monitoring his condition through Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Indian team physician.
Explained: What is a spleen laceration and how serious is Shreyas Iyer's injury?
Iyer suffered an injury to his lower left rib cage while attempting a challenging running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana's bowling during the third ODI at the SCG.
Although he initially managed to walk off the field with assistance from the physio, his condition worsened soon after, with a drop in vital parameters prompting immediate hospitalization.
Further medical examinations revealed internal bleeding due to a laceration in the spleen, after which he was shifted to the ICU for close observation.
Suryakumar's encouraging update
At a press conference on Tuesday, India T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav provided details on Iyer's condition, confirming that the 29-year-old batter is now able to communicate with others.
"The first day I got to know he was injured, I called him. Then I found out he didn't have his phone with him, so I called the physio, Kamlesh Jain. But I have been talking to him over the last two days. He has been replying," Suryakumar said.
"Agar woh reply kar raha hai, that means he is stable. It's looking good... the doctors are there already. They will keep him under observation for a few days. However, he has been replying and talking to everyone, which is good," he added ahead of the first T20I against Australia.
