Shreyas Iyer posted an encouraging injury update on Tuesday, sharing a photo of himself riding an exercise bike as part of his rehabilitation. He is steadily recovering after suffering a life-threatening spleen injury during the ODI series against Australia last month.

Iyer sustained the injury while diving in the deep to complete a difficult catch, taking a severe blow to his abdomen. The impact resulted in a spleen laceration and internal bleeding that left him in critical condition. According to reports, immediate intervention by the BCCI medical team proved crucial; without swift action, the internal haemorrhage could have posed a fatal risk. Iyer underwent a procedure to control the bleeding and was later discharged once his condition stabilised.

During his recovery, Iyer made a rare public appearance at Punjab Kings all-rounder Shashank Singh’s birthday celebration, where he met PBKS co-owner and actor Preity Zinta and actor Dino Morea. Images shared by Zinta reassured fans that Iyer was in good spirits and recovering well.

India’s designated ODI vice-captain, Iyer was ruled out of the South Africa series due to the injury and subsequent surgery in Australia. His recovery timeline is now longer than initially expected, and his availability for the limited-overs series against New Zealand in January remains uncertain. His return will depend entirely on the progress of his rehabilitation.

The setback could also affect Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. Iyer, who captained the franchise in IPL 2025, is likely to miss the early part of the 2026 season. A preliminary scan at his residence has shown positive signs, but doctors have recommended a more detailed assessment in two months. Only after that evaluation will there be clarity on his readiness for competitive cricket.
