NEW DELHI: After Shreyas Iyer was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital and began recovering from a spleen laceration, the star cricketer's family decided not to travel to Sydney to be with their ailing son.

Shreyas' father, Santosh Iyer, was elated with the way his son is being treated in Sydney and confirmed that he might be discharged even before the weekend. Hence, the family dropped their plan to travel to Sydney.

Explained: What is a spleen laceration and how serious is Shreyas Iyer's injury?

"The BCCI is monitoring his injury and he is on a recovery path. The best doctor in Sydney is treating him. He is likely to get discharged by weekend and perhaps may get even before that. Since he is not a part of the T20I squad, he will return soon. Contrary to earlier reports, we are not going to Sydney," Santosh Iyer told Deccan Chronicle.

How was Iyer injured?

Iyer suffered an injury to his lower left rib cage while attempting a challenging running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana's bowling during the third ODI at the SCG.

Although he initially managed to walk off the field with assistance from the physio, his condition worsened soon after, with a drop in vital parameters prompting immediate hospitalization.

Further medical examinations revealed internal bleeding due to a laceration in the spleen, after which he was shifted to the ICU for close observation.

Suryakumar's encouraging update

At a press conference on Tuesday, Suryakumar provided details on Iyer's condition, confirming that the 29-year-old batter is now able to communicate with others.

"The first day I got to know he was injured, I called him. Then I found out he didn't have his phone with him, so I called the physio, Kamlesh Jain. But I have been talking to him over the last two days. He has been replying," Suryakumar said.

"Agar woh reply kar raha hai, that means he is stable. It's looking good... the doctors are there already. They will keep him under observation for a few days. However, he has been replying and talking to everyone, which is good," he added ahead of the first T20I against Australia.
